TIRUCHI: With the demand for energy assuming a serious proportion, people should be sensitised to the use of non-conventional energy sources, Chief Engineer (Distribution), Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Tiruchi region, R. Seetharaman, said.

Presiding over the valediction of the ‘Energy Conservation Week’ organised here recently, he said that the gap between demand and supply of energy was on the rise.

The depletion of lignite and coal was posing a grave threat to the power planners across the country, he said urging the TNEB officials and representatives of various service organisations to launch an intensive propaganda among the masses about energy conservation techniques.

In the present-day context, economy in power consumption was the only option to face the challenges ahead.

BHEL Small and Medium Industries Association president K. G. Muralidharan spoke on the rapid industrialisation of tier-II cities which necessitated generation of additional power.

He appealed to the small and medium scale industries to contribute their mite for energy conservation techniques.

TNEB Superintending Engineer (Operation) T. Rajmohan; Urumu Dhanalakshmi College Principal K. Sekar and Tiruchi Payaneetalar Sangam president Sakutala Srinivasan were among those who spoke.

They emphasised the need for the use of energy-saving devices for domestic and commercial electrical fittings.

Tamil scholar So. Sathyaseelan gave away prizes to winners in elocution competition on ‘energy conservation’ held as part of the celebrations.
