Focus on improving slow-learners

Education Department brings out special study materials for them

TIRUCHI: The School Education Department in the district has brought out special study materials for slow learners for improving the pass percentage in the SSLC and Plus Two public examinations this year.

Department officials are hopeful of increasing the overall pass percentage by five percentage points, by giving extra-attention on slow-learners.

The pass percentage was 91 in both examinations in 2007-08. In the preceding year, it was 91 in standard X and 86 in standard XII.

Having set a target of 96 per cent overall pass, the department has started providing study materials for slow learners in standard XII. For those in standard X, the materials are being readied.

The task of preparing the study materials has been entrusted with teachers who had produced appreciable results consistently over the years. The answers are also being provided along with the questions chosen for the study materials.

Confidence-booster

Slow learners can now feel confident of securing a minimum pass , Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan said.

For improving the number of students securing State-level ranks, the department has decided to provide specialised guidance to students whom the headmasters identify as being capable of achieving the feat.

Bright students

The list of such students will be prepared at a meeting of headmasters slated for the first week of January.

Individual attention would be provided by result-oriented teachers.

The focus will be on tweaking their approach, wherever required, Mr. Swaminathan said.
