Tight security detail for Khaleda, Hasina

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s Home Adviser Major General (retired) MA Matin has said unassailable security measures are in place to protect the two former Prime Ministers, Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina. Both leaders spoke of threats to their lives ahead of the December 29 elections.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia has alleged a bid on her life at a campaign rally. Four grenades were recovered and two suspected militants were arrested on Tuesday about four km away from the meeting place. The Home official said, “Tough security measures were taken for the two leaders.”

Asked about fears of disruption to the polls, the official dismissed the apprehension. “Some may apprehend, but such an apprehension is unwarranted.”
