Linux group to discuss free software in schools

Staff Reporter

Kochi: The Indian Linux Users’ Group (ILUG), Kochi chapter, will discuss various aspects of free software education in schools in the State at its monthly meeting at the Internet Club in Broadway Enclave on Sunday.

The thrust of the meeting will be to bridge the gap between the teaching community and the free software fraternity.

The meeting will analyse the current state of free software education to figure out if it is taught as just another technology instead of being seen as a ‘social movement’.

It will also take a serious look at whether free software is employed as a tool to stimulate creativity in the younger generation.

The group will then set about building a framework for teachers and the free software community, giving emphasis on the ways to provide required support to teachers as also to enable the community members to make a living using the free software. “The action plan will then be put before decision makers thereby voicing the community’s concern and support,” said Sameer Mohamed Thahir, group coordinator of the Users Group.
