Indian Bank-SBI match ends in draw

Chennai: The St. Joseph’s-CFA senior division football match between Indian Bank and State Bank of India on Wednesday ended in a goalless draw.

In the first half, left winger K.V. Gunasekar chased down the diagonal balls sprayed out from midfield tirelessly, and enjoyed the support of left back Bengkok Nameirakpam.

One such move led to Indian Bank’s clearest chance, as Bengkok, upon getting the ball from Gunasekar, curled a cross into the path of B. Nirmal Kumar arriving from the opposite flank. Nirmal’s touch, however, was heavy, and the ball rolled into the State Bank keeper’s hands.

Soon after, Gunasekar cushioned a header into the box, only for M. Elamurugan to miss with a wild swipe.

It was down the right that Indian Bank attacked for most part of the second half, and the goal nearly came when Nirmal, finding himself unmarked, shot powerfully on target, only for State Bank’s John Carlo to clear off the line.

With the last meaningful kick of the game, Nirmal missed Indian Bank’s last chance, drilling his shot from outside the box narrowly wide of the far post.

Earlier, FCI beat Chennai Soccer 2-1 in a First Division game, with Fredy Jose scoring the winner after Chennai Soccer’s Murugan had cancelled out Biju Mathew’s early goal.

The Senior and First Division leagues will take a day’s break on Thursday for Christmas.

Due to the Police Athletic Meet at Nehru Stadium, the first division matches scheduled for Dec. 27, 28 and 29, and the senior division match on December 29, have been postponed. — Sports Reporter
