NEW DELHI: Political rivals of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Wednesday deplored the Auraiya incident in which an engineer was beaten to death allegedly by a ruling party MLA and his henchmen, with the Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) urging the Centre to “intervene” and seek a report from the Uttar Pradesh Governor. The party gave a call for Uttar Pradesh “bandh” on Thursday to protest “the culture of money collection through corrupt practices and hooliganism.” . Describing the death of the Auraiya Public Works Department engineer, M.K. Gupta, as unfortunate, SP general secretary Amar Singh alleged that the “target of money collection” set for the BSP functionaries for Ms. Mayawati’s birthday next month was nothing short of “an organised crime.” “It is sad that one person had to die to bring this to light.” The SP leader said he would apprise senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee and Ahmed Patel, the political secretary to Sonia Gandhi, of the incident. To a question, he said he would “welcome” if the ally Congress would join the “bandh.” Both the Congress and the BJP condemned the “atrocious” incident and said “such behaviour was unacceptable.” BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said action should be taken against the guilty regardless of their political affiliation. AICC general secretary in charge of U.P., Digvijay Singh, expressed surprise that the police FIR was registered against unidentified persons. D. Raja of the Communist Party of India said the law must take its course.
