Special village monitoring committee to be set up

To monitor open irrigation well rehabilitation scheme

DINDIGUL: A special village monitoring committee will be set up at all villages in the district within a week to monitor implementation of open irrigation well rehabilitation scheme.

Community participation is essential for successful implementation, according to Collector R. Vasuki.

She was addressing a special demonstration-cum-training programme for farmers and officials at Anjukuzhipatti near here on Tuesday. Panchayat president would be the chairman of the committee. Noon meal organisers, school teachers, continuing education coordinators, college students and social volunteers would be its members.

The committee would explain benefits of the scheme to farmers and convince them to rehabilitate their open wells, she added.

With an effective propagation, the district administration received over 22,000 applications for funds to rehabilitate open wells.

After scrutiny, these applications had been forwarded to state-level committee for funds. In the first phase, funds were released to 4,788 farmers in the district so far.

Rainwater harvesting structures

Creation of rainwater harvesting structures was also taught to farmers at the training session.

Farmers, 24 panchayat presidents, assistant surveyors, Panchayat union commissioners took part.

The State and Central governments sanctioned Rs.5 crore for the district for rehabilitation of irrigation wells and creation of rainwater harvesting structures near them to improve the groundwater table for the benefit of small and tiny farmers.

Each farmer, having irrigation well, would get Rs.4,000 for desilting and rehabilitation.

They can create rainwater harvesting structures near the well.
