Take precautionary measures, mango farmers told

Staff Correspondent

Trees have started flowering one month ahead of schedule

HASSAN: Deputy Director for Horticulture Nagaraj has appealed to farmers growing mango to take precautionary measures as flowering has started ahead of schedule by a month.

It is the prevailing situation all over the State, he said and advised farmers to take precaution against a possible pest attack.

Chemical spray

Through a press release here on Tuesday, Dr. Nagaraj advised farmers to prepare a mixture of chlorofiriphos (12.5 ml) or carbaryl (4 gram) or imidacloprid (0.3 ml) and bavistin (1.5 gram) in one litre of water and spray it on the tree especially concentrating on the flower portion to prevent hoppers, anthracnose and blossom blight diseases.

A second spray, a mixture of sevin (4 gram) and wettable sulphur (3 gram) in one litre of water, should be carried out 15 days later.

This would help prevent ahids and ash diseases. If there is rain, a mixture of bavistin (1.5 gram) or DM 45 (3 gram) in one litre of water should be sprayed on the plants.

This would help prevent drying of flowers, he said.

Dr. Nagaraj said the Badami variety of mango is susceptible to blossom blight disease, and hence, for every spell of rain, or if there is thick mist, the prescribed chemical mixtures are to be sprayed.

Disease likely

In January, there is a possibility of ash disease attacking the crop.

Then, sevil (4 gram) or chlorofiriphos (2.5 ml) and wettable sulphur (3 gram) should be mixed in one litre of water and sprayed.

Dr. Nagaraj also said that growers could contact senior assistant directors in their taluks or the deputy director in Hassan for help.
