NEW DELHI: In order to make best use of the ‘Scheme for Preparation of Teams for the 2010 Commonwealth Games,’ the Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill has directed various national federations to expeditiously settle contracts with coaches. After having a look at the feedback gathered at a recent review meeting –— attended by office-bearers of different federations, officers of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Olympic Association — Mr. Gill has stressed that sports and support equipment and consumable articles are made available in time. He directed to closely monitor the progress of the scheme and provide kits to sportspersons in camps without any delay. It was also decided to make available training facilities at non-Sports Authority of India (SAI) venues at certain locations — Chennai (swimming), Hyderabad (badminton), Pune (tennis and shooting). The Government has already approved Rs. 678 crore under the scheme. About 1,300 elite athletes (in 17 disciplines), 250 coaches (both Indian and foreign), 80 support staff (physiotherapists, psychologist, masseurs etc) have been selected. These athletes will be funded by the Government for intensive training of 305 days in a year, both within and outside the country. Coaching camps for the selected athletes have started at the various SAI centres. The athletes will be assessed at regular intervals, through pre-decided parameters, till the final selection for the Commonwealth Games. — Special Correspondent
