U.P. men and women post wins

VISAKHAPATNAM: Uttar Pradesh men and women won their play-off matches to have a go at the quarterfinal berths of the Senior National volleyball championships at the Port indoor stadium here on Wednesday.

In the men’s play-off match, U.P. (Pool D topper) overcame Andhra Pradesh (Pool C topper) 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20.

In the women’s section U.P. (Pool C) beat Haryana (Pool D) 25-17, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14 and Punjab (Pool F) bt Delhi (Pool E) 25-15, 25-17, 25-12.

As the league phase came to an end late on Tuesday night, score quotient came into play to determine the standings of top three teams of Pool A in the men and women’s sections. Railways’ 25-15, 28-26, 25-19 win over holder Haryana on Tuesday night saw it finish behind Uttarakhand and Services in the men’s Pool A after each team earned five points from three matches.

In the women’s Pool A, West Bengal pushed holder Kerala to the second spot while host AP was placed third. Here also each team logged five points.

The other teams that made quarterfinals were men’s runner-up Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Punjab from men’s Pool B and women’s runner-up Railways, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu from Pool B in that order.

The fourth placed teams of A and B pools, Haryana and Karnataka in the men’s section and Maharashtra and Chandigarh in the women’s section, will play quarterfinals qualifying matches with winners of play-offs.

Line-up for two quarterfinals each in the men and women’s sections has been decided based on the teams’ position in the league. In the women’s section, Karnataka meets AP and Kerala faces Tamil Nadu on Thursday. In the men’s section Kerala plays Railways and Services takes on Punjab on Friday. The line-up for the rest of quarterfinal matches will be decided after the qualifying matches are completed.

Uttar Pradesh defeated Puducherry 25-15, 25-19, 25-11 on Tuesday night to top men’s Pool D with eight points from four matches.
