Calicut men and Kannur women take team titles

KOCHI: Calicut and Kannur walked away with the honours in the all-India inter-university athletics championship which concluded at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Wednesday.

After grabbing both the final relay thrillers, Calicut won the overall championship after five years, with seven golds, and the men’s team title, while Kannur, inspired by its star Mayookha Johny, lifted its maiden women’s title with five golds, four of them with records.

Tintu anchors

Tintu Luka, one of the country’s most promising juniors, anchored the Calicut women’s 4x400 relay team to a record, beating the previous mark by nearly four seconds.

Calicut, despite being without its star Shejil Varghese, was also on a record run later in the men’s relay.

Kurukshetra’s decathlete Bhartinder and Punjabi’s Om Prakash Singh, in men’s shot put, set the day’s other two records.

The results: Men: 200m: 1. Md Abdul Najeeb (Kakatiya, Warangal) 21.83s, 2. C.G. Anas (Calicut) 21.89, 3. Dharambir (MDU, Rothak) 21.93.

10,000m: 1. Deep Chandra (CSJM, Kanpur) 30:51.9s, 2. B. Ezhinilavan (Madras, Chennai) 30:53, 3. Ashok Kumar Yadav (VBS Purvanchal) 31:09.7.

4x400m relay: 1. Calicut (V. Sajin, T.C. Abdul Rafeeque, P.P. Kunhimuhammed, Jithin Paul) 3:13.4s NMR, OR GNDU, 3:15.38s, 2006; 2. MG, Kottayam 3:15.06 BMR, 3. Annamalai 3:15.89. Shot put: 1. Om Prakash Singh (Punjabi, Patiala) 18.71m NMR, OR Ram Vijay Singh, VBS Uni., 18.45m, 2004; 2. Saurabh Vij (MDU, Rothak) 18.67 BMR; 3. Sunil Kumar (Rajasthan, Jaipur) 16.50. Decathlon: 1.
