Top three seeds crash out

BANGALORE: It was massacre of seeds in the boys under-14 singles quarterfinals of the Mahila Seva Samaja–AITA Talent Series tennis championship at the MSS courts, here on Wednesday.

The top three seeds, S. Kishan, Harsha Manjunath, and Rohit John Joseph crashed out against their respective rivals.

Sixth seed Evans Mirajkar accounted for Kishan at 6-0, 6-3, while Manjunath went down easily to seventh seed S. Siddarth 1-6, 2-6 and K. Basavaraj humbled Rohit 6-3, 7-6(5). Fourth seed Nihal Agha, however, scraped past qualifier Anthony Savio in a three setter at 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Kishan’s poor run continued in the under-16 singles also as he lost to Siddarth 3-6, 1-6 and top seed S. Raghavendra prevailed over Basavaaj 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3.

S.P. Ritu entered both the girls’ under-14 and 16 singles semifinals. In the under-16 tie, she beat C. Varunya 7-5,1-6,6-3 and she beat Varunya again in the under-14 singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The results (quarterfinals): Boys : U-14 singles : Evans Mirajkar bt S. Kishan 6-0, 6-3; Nihal Agha bt Anthony Savio 1-6, 7-5, 7-5; K. Basavaraj bt Rohit John Joseph 6-3, 7-6(5); S. Siddarth bt Harsha Manjunath 6-1, 6-2.

U-16 singles: S. Raghavendra bt K. Basavaraj 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3; Harsha Manjunath bt Rohit John Joseph 1-0 (conceded); Nikhil Prasad bt Evans Mirajkar 4-6, 6-4, 6-3; S. Siddarth bt S. Kishan 6-3, 6-1.

Girls: U-14 singles: Preethi Gokhale bt S.S. Deepika 6-3 ,6-0 ; Shloka Kumar bt K. Uttara 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3; Shruthi Prashanth bt Nupur Umashankar 7-6(5), 7-6(5); S.P. Ritu bt C. Varunya 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

U-16 singles: Shalaka Manjunath bt Kavya N. Kumar 6-2, 6-0; S.P. Ritu bt C. Varunya 7-5, 1-6, 6-3; Vidya Bharath bt Swathi H. Kumar 6-1, 6-3; Rachita Sarda bt Preethi Gokhale 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.

DPS (North) wins

Delhi Public School (North) won the inaugural Bangalore inter-school Touch Rugby tournament conducted by Karnataka Rugby Football Union (KRFU) at Inventure Academy here.

In the Under -17 category, DPS (North) defeated Frank Anthony Public School 45- 25 in the final.

In the Under 14 section, FAPS beat Dream- a- Dream ` A’ outfit 25 -15 and emerged as the champion.

FPS triumphs

Florence Public School emerged as champion in the senior section of the Florence Cup inter-school tournament beating Royal Cricket Academy, Colombo by 59 runs in the final match of the three game series. Florence PS thus made a clean winning all the ties. The highlight of Florence’s victory on Wednesday was an 84 by Kiran More.

In the junior section, Roya Cricket Academy beat Florence PS by 12 runs and won the title.

The scores: Seniors: Florence PS 199 for eight in 40 overs (Kiran More 84, Lashitha four for 44) beat Royal Cricket Academy 140 for nine in 40 overs (Sharak 60, F. Khan four for 32 ).

Juniors: Royal CA 155 for three in 40 overs (Chalana 56) bt Florence PS 134 in 38 overs (Vyashak 48).

Gold for Harsha

Leading aircraftsman Harsha of Training Command (Bangalore) bagged the long jump gold with an effort of 6.31m, while Rampal won the 1,500m in 4m 14.4s in the Indian Air Force athletic championship at the IAF grounds, Jalahalli, here on Wednesday.

Teams from all commands of the Air Force, including the training establishments, are taking part.

The results (winners only): 1,500m: Rampal (4:14.4s); 4x100m relay: South Western Air Command 44.6; Long jump: Harsha (Training Command, 6.31m); Shot put: Cpl. D. Singh (CAC, 13.30m).

Naveen to lead

Naveen and Yeshodha will captain the Karnataka men’s and women’s throwball teams for the 30th senior National throwball championships to be held at Ghaziabad (UP) from December 28 to 31.

The teams: Men: Naveen (captain), Aquib, Asif, Deepak, Nagaraj, Rohith, Fayaz, Arjun, Rajesh, Uday, Amarnath, Lakshmikanth. Manager: Basava Raj. Coach: K.A. Govinda Raj.

Women: D. Yeshodha (captain cum coach), Bhavya, Manjula, Himavathi, Swetha, Shruthi, Sahana, Champa, Yogitha, Reshma, Preethi, Amrutha, Tejaswini. Manager: Jayakumar.

Chinmaya advances

Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Hubli defeated MR Sakhare English Medium High School of Hubli by five wickets and entered the semifinal of the KSCA U-16 inter-school cricket tournament at Hubli on Wednesday.

In the other match of the day at SDM Dental College Ground, Dharwad KE Board’s High School, Dharwad won against St. Mary’s High School by eight wickets.

The scores: MR Sakhare HS, Hubli 99 in 22.4 overs (Niranjan Phadnavis four for 10, Neeraj three for 27) lost to Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Hubli 100 for five (Rahul D. 32 not out).

St. Mary’s HS, Hubli 113 in 29.1 overs (Rakesh Wali 3 for 20) lost to KE Board’s HS, Dharwad 114 for two in 10.1 overs (Shashank Hulamani 39, Rahul Chavan 39).
