RACING AGAINST TIME: An electronic board ticking outside the court hall.

MADURAI: One of the judges of the Madras High Court conducted the court proceedings till 9.40 p.m., signed the judgments dictated by him till 12.30 a.m. and disposed of as many as 172 cases in a single day.

Justice G. Rajasuria kept up his promise made last week to the Madurai Bench lawyers by working till the midnight of Monday to clear all their cases before the fortnight-long Christmas vacation beginning Wednesday.

The Judge began the court proceedings as usual at 10.30 a.m. and heard as many as 210 cases, including 84 lunch motions (cases filed on the same day), until 9.40 p.m. with an hour’s recess at 1.30 p.m. and a 15-minute tea break at 6 p.m.

However, the visibly tired court staff felt that the Registry should have made some kind of alternative arrangements for such a marathon sitting.

“Many of us had to skip our dinner, some struggled to catch a bus late at night and a few others left the court campus as late as 3.30 a.m. It was a first of a kind experience for many of us,” an employee said.
