CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has come forward to host the first edition of the AIFF under-14 girls football festival and it is to be organised by the Hindustan University at its campus in Padur from December 24 to January 1. The event is part of the federation’s exercise in attracting young talent to the sport. This is also in keeping with the initiative the Asian Confederation has taken in the matter. There are festivals at the Asian level in both under-13 and under-14 sections. The theme of these festivals is make the ‘future stars’ enjoy the game through active participation (eight-a-side game), improve their knowledge (quiz programme) and also their general personality by showing their skills in cultural activities. “The Fairplay Trophy, decided on various technical points on activities on and off the football field, is what each team vies for,” said Renuka Lakshmi, the TFA women’s football convenor at a press briefing on Monday. Last year Tamil Nadu had won this trophy in the under-13 girls football festival held in Orissa. “Both these tourneys will henceforth be held in alternate years as per AIFF directive,” she said. Earlier the TFA president, Cletus Babu, said 21 State teams had confirmed their entries. He thanked Hindustan University for making all arrangements. The technical aspects would be looked after by former FIFA assistant referee K. Sankar. — Special Correspondent
