HYDERABAD: South Central Railway (SCR) won the inaugural Vamshi Krishna memorial invitation hockey tournament, defeating Andhra Pradesh Police 2-1 in the final at the Begumpet Police Stadium here on Monday. In a lacklustre first-half, SCR took the lead in the 25th minute when Bharath showed fine sense of opportunism when the Police defenders Faiyazuddin and Narendra allowed a cross from Mohd. Aleem to slip past them. The waiting Bharath was smart enough to slot the ball in, catching custodian Srinivasa Rao on the wrong foot. At half-time, SCR led 1-0. Brilliant effortOn resumption, AP Police levelled the score, thanks to a brilliant effort from Ajay Babu who dribbled his way from the half-line and dodged past a crowded defence before essaying a perfect minus to the waiting Suri Babu. The latter accepted the chance and slotted the ball in. The SCR outfit launched a series of counter-attacks, which saw it earn four penalty-corners in this phase. In the 64th minute, SCR’s Amit Kumar initiated a fine move from the left when he dribbled down the flank to give a through pass to Amit Srivastava. Perfectly placedHe, in turn, slipped into the circle to give a swift and short pass back to Amit who was in perfect position to score with a diving effort to net the match-winner. Krishna Ram, father of Vamshi Krishna, the former junior national player who passed away in a road accident last year, gave away the prizes along with Aleem Khan, District Sports Development Officer.
