Reject AIADMK’s charges against Azhagiri: DMK

Special Correspondent

DMK MPs seek action against AIADMK candidate

NEW DELHI: The DMK has requested Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswamy to reject the AIADMK’s “false” memorandum, urging the Election Commission to prevent Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s son M.K. Azhagiri from entering the Thirumangalam Assembly constituency, where by-poll will be held on January 9.

A delegation of DMK MPs led by Union Shipping Minister and DMK parliamentary party leader T.R. Baalu, which met the CEC, urged him to take action against the AIADMK for “misusing this august forum for mere political gains and belittling the functions of a high constitutional authority like EC.”

Legal action

The DMK had the right to initiate legal action, both civil and criminal, against the AIADMK for its “false representation.”

They recalled the dismissal, “for want of proof”, of a petition filed by the AIADMK in the Madras High Court alleging that Mr. Azhagiri was “functioning as an extra constitutional authority in southern districts of Tamil Nadu.” Even in the by-elections held earlier for Madurai West and Madurai Central Assembly constituencies, there was no proof from any quarters that Mr. Azhagiri had either threatened or bribed the voters.

About the AIADMK’s specific request that Mr. Azhagiri be barred from entering the Thirumangalam constituency, citing criminal cases against him, the DMK said AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa was facing “at least half a dozen criminal cases on this date.” If any criminal case accused was to be prevented from entering the constituency, it should be Ms. Jayalalithaa.

On the AIADMK’s allegation that the DMK government had released 1405 convicts to do election work for the DMK in Thirumangalam, they pointed out that the release took place in September 2008, whereas MDMK legislator Veera Elavarasan died on November 8, necessitating the by-election.

The DMK MPs sought action against AIADMK candidate M. Muthuramalingam for filing nomination on December 18, accompanied by 26 persons, including former ministers and MPs, which was a violation of the model code of conduct.
