Dance festival begins on Thursday

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The annual dance festival at Mamallapuram gets under way on December 25. This year’s package will showcase folk and classical forms from across the country.

The month-long ‘India Dance Festival’ will involve 1,500 artists, including about 70 dancers from the State.

Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan told a press conference on Monday that this year’s event was not only culturally richer but would also feature dance performances every day.

Since its launch in 1992, the festival had been showcasing folk and classical dances of Tamil Nadu, with the performances being staged on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The festival was a major draw for international tourists: an estimated 1.26 lakh foreigners witnessed the event last year.

Tourism managers expected a larger tourist turnout this year despite the Mumbai terror attacks, as calm had been restored, he said.

Mr. Suresh Rajan said the State’s tourism industry was growing at a healthy 22 per cent a year. The number of international tourists visiting the State this year was expected to surpass the 17 lakh who arrived last year. The number of domestic tourists was 50 lakh last year.

Among the States being represented at the festival are Rajasthan, Jharkand, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam and Manipur, Tourism Secretary V. Irai Anbu said.

Crafts bazaar

The opening day would feature a one-and-a-half hour curtain-raiser, which would provide a snapshot of folk, classical and harvest festival traditions of the State. A crafts bazaar would also be held. Tourism Commissioner M. Rajaram said no room crunch was experienced during the dance festival season, as many tourists chose to stay in Chennai. However, hotel rooms of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation there were fully booked.
