Nagaswaram exponent honoured

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Nagaswaram exponent Sembonarkoil S.R.D. Vaidhyanathan was on Sunday honoured with the ‘Isaiperaringnar’ title at the 66th annual music festival of the Tamil Isai Sangam.

The award, consisting of a gold medal, a citation, a silver plaque and a cash prize of Rs.10,000, was given away by Chennai Kamban Kazhagam president RM. Veerappan.

Mr. Veerappan urged the musicians to sing Tamil songs at concerts. “We are not against other languages; we are only requesting them to sing in Tamil for the development of Tamil music.”

Tamil Isai Sangam president P.R. Gokulakrishnan wondered why the patronage for Tamil music in sabhas was lesser than what it was for the other languages and suggested that Tamil music be introduced as a compulsory subject in schools and preference in employment given to those who mastered it. Mr.Vaidhyanathan said he considered the award a honour to his guru.
