Bangalore: Did you know that employees, who are laid off by their companies, can avail themselves of ESI benefits, including salary compensation and medical assistance, up to two years? This was revealed by State Medical Commissioner of ESI Corporation B.R. Kavi Shetty on Monday at the inauguration of a project to strengthen ESI Corporation intervention on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Family Welfare. Listing the benefits under ESI scheme for card holders, Dr. Shetty said the corporation would compensate the salaries of the laid off employees and provide medical benefits to the family members of the employee too. He pointed out that not many knew of these benefits. The project called “Sankalp” has been launched by Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT) in collaboration with the ESI Corporation. The project is aimed at working among the 50 lakh ESI beneficiaries in the State to prevent and control HIV/AIDS. The project will also contribute towards achieving the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) goals, Director of Project Sankalp S.J. Chander said. He said the project was conceived after noticing that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS was high among ESI card holders. “When the card holders visited ESI hospitals and dispensaries for other medical services, they were found to be positive. This made us start this project so that these people can be linked to care and support groups and also given treatment,” Mr. Chander said. As part of Sankalp, an outreach programme was also launched in Lakshmidevinagar in Peenya Industrial Area on Monday to create awareness on HIV/AIDS and health entitlement of the beneficiaries. Additional Project Director Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS) Prema inaugurated the project.
