Panel chalks out project to obtain GI status

R Vimal Kumar

Tirupur: The Textiles Committee has chalked out a project to obtain Geographical Indicator (GI) status for Toda embroidery, according to Pradeep Gupta, Member-Secretary, Textiles Committee, Government of India. “We are now in the process of submitting the representations to the Registrar of Geographical Indication, Chennai, to get the product registered under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999,” he told The Hindu.

He pointed out that the special logo coming with the status would enhance the value of the traditional textile, which was unique with its rich effect and used for adorning a wide range of products.

“Besides, GI symbol conveys an assurance of quality which is essentially attributable to that fact of its origin in the defined geographical locality,” he said.

Mr. Gupta said that similar efforts were being taken by the Committee to help Balaramapuram saris and dhotis, Kasargod saris, Chennamangalam dhotis, Koothampalli saris, all unique handloom products from different parts of Kerala, Sholapur terry towels from Maharastra and home furnishing textiles from Kannur in Kerala attain the GI status. On other initiatives mooted by the Committee for overall development of the sector, Mr. Gupta said that its 19 textile testing laboratories located across the country would be modernised at an outlay of Rs. 20 crore before 2009-10.

He said that an action plan had been chalked out to impart periodic training to the technical staff at the Committee laboratories to update them on the changing requirements pertaining to Total Quality Management concept.

“The staff will in turn disseminate the concept to the textile entrepreneurs, for quality and production enhancement,” he added.
