Protesting Congress cadres arrested

CHENNAI: Police arrested several persons belonging to the Congress on charges of staging a protest near Mint junction on Sunday. The arrest was made following self-immolation threat by some protestors.
On Sunday morning, around 50 party workers congregated at the junction and demanded action against those who had burnt effigies of Congress leaders on Saturday. According to police, four persons, including the North Chennai district secretary, were arrested.
Fourteen others who were arrested during the protest were later released.
Five more persons were arrested on Sunday in connection with the burning of effigies of Congress leaders E.V.K.S. Elangovan and K.V. Thangkabalu on Saturday. The arrested persons were members of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).
