Special camps for students in tribal areas of Salem district

Special Correspondent

To issue community certificates to help students obtain education loans

YERCAUD: To streamline the issuance of community certificates to tribal students and to ensure a steady flow of educational loans for them in a sustained manner, the district administration is all set to conduct a series of special camps in the tribal belt in which officials from revenue, banks and Department of Education in Salem district will participate. Disclosing this at the special mass contact programme at Chinnamathur tribal hamlet in Yercaud hills on Thursday, Collector J. Chandrakumar said that many tribal parents and their wards had expressed anguish over the inordinate delay in issuing the community certificates, which they pointed out had jeopardized education.

Taking this issue into account, he had chalked out a fool-proof mechanism to sort out the vexatious problem in the form of special camps with officials from banks, revenue and education departments providing a clinching solution to it.

“We will soon issue certificates to right beneficiaries after proper verification,” he further stated. He asked the tribal people to make use of the polio plus camps on December 21 and February 2 for which the health officials would visit villages and hamlets. To achieve 100 per cent coverage the Department of Health would adopt a new approach.

“They are asked to verify the birth records of babies born between 2003 and 2008 so that a comprehensive list of babies who should be administered polio drops in the district will be prepared,” he said. He said that he had sought funds to the tune of Rs.5 crore from the government to promote tourism related activities in the hills.
