Udhagamandalam: Under the aegis of the recently formed Nilgiris District Residents Protection Committee a demonstration was staged at Kotagiri on Monday to condemn the management of the Kodanad Estate, near Kotagiri, for putting up a massive building over about 40,336 sq. ft. allegedly in violation of the building rules.

Speakers, including the Rural Industries Minister Pongalur Palanisamy, the Highways Minister, M.P. Saminathan, and the Khadi Board Minister, K. Ramachandran, pointed out that the new building rules had been framed in 1993.

They emphasised the need to adopt a uniform policy in matters relating to constructions.

HC order

Pointing out that in keeping with an order of the High Court the authorities were in the process of demolishing hundreds of buildings which had been put up in violation of the building rules they wondered why no action had been taken against the building in the Kodanad estate. They averred that the rules should apply to all.

The president of the committee, P. Veerabadhran presided.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK district secretary, M. Selvaraj, claimed in a statement issued here on Monday that the Committee comprising mainly DMK functionaries had been formed only to stage the demonstration which was aimed at diverting the attention of the people from major problems.

Demolition

He regretted that though the ongoing demolition of buildings was a matter connected with the High Court, the police had given permission for the demonstration. He claimed that the building put up by the district DMK here was unauthorised.
