Works for sports stadium progressing well

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: A sports stadium with modern amenities, a long pending dream of the people in the district, is coming up fast. The cost of the project has been revised upward to Rs. 4 crore.

Facilities

The stadium will have courts for basketball, volleyball, tennis, kabaddi and kho-kho, a 400m athletic track, a football ground, a boxing ring and other facilities. A gallery with a seating capacity of 2,000 will be constructed. The stadium will also have an office for the district sports officer, a guest house, trainers’ room, dressing rooms and toilets.

The administration has selected a 15-acre land in the District Collectorate complex for the establishment of the stadium.

Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the stadium last year and works began in last September.

Collector U. Sagayam, reviewing the progress of the works, said that the volleyball court, tennis court and the 400 m athletic track will be brought to public use within a month time.

Fitness centre

The construction of the fitness centre is also progressing steadily. Equipment to the tune of Rs. 2.5 lakh would be procured for the centre shortly. The administration has also sent a proposal to the State government to establish a swimming pool near it at a cost of Rs. 82 lakh.

Motivation

To motivate the youth to take more interest in sports, Kabaddi tournaments would be held in all the blocks during Pongal festivities. Volleyball and netball competitions would also be held for the rural youth.

Trekking and rock climbing events would be held in Kolli Hills, the Collector said.A sporting facility would be created for the youth in the tribal villages in Kolli Hills, he added.
