Special Correspondent

Door-to-door campaign for three days

Target was 1,65,625 children aged less than five

‘Do not give credence to rumours’

SHIMOGA: Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey said here on Monday that 94 per cent of the target set for the Pulse Polio Programme was achieved in the drive taken up in Shimoga district on Sunday.

Talking to presspersons, he said that 94 per cent of the 1,65,625 children aged less than five were administered polio drops in the booths at different places in the district.

He said that the house-to-house drive would be taken up in three days in urban areas and two days in rural areas to achieve 100 per cent coverage.

He confirmed that there were no complaints whatsoever during or after administering polio drops as strict instructions had been given not to administer the drops to those children suffering from fever.

He said that utmost care had been taken to avoid problems in the implementation of the programme as it was launched to eradicate polio totally.

Mr. Pandey asked people not to give any credence to the rumours being spread about adverse effects of polio drops.

The taluk-wise percentage and the number of children covered under the drive is: Shimoga 45,816 children and 94.5 per cent coverage; Bhadravati 35,148 children and 91.3 per cent coverage; Tirthahalli 10,291 children and 92.1 per cent coverage; Hosnagar 9,650 children and 95.04 per cent coverage; Sagar 16,231 children and 97.2 per cent coverage; Sorab 16,665 children and 97.2 per cent coverage; and Shikaripur 22,132 children and 95.8 per cent coverage.
