CHENNAI: Police arrested several persons belonging to the Congress on charges of staging a protest near Mint junction on Sunday. The arrest was made following self-immolation threat by some protestors. On Sunday morning, around 50 party workers congregated at the junction and demanded action against those who had burnt effigies of Congress leaders on Saturday. According to police, four persons, including the North Chennai district secretary, were arrested. Fourteen others who were arrested during the protest were later released. 5 held in effigy burning caseFive more persons were arrested on Sunday in connection with the burning of effigies of Congress leaders E.V.K.S. Elangovan and K.V. Thangkabalu on Saturday. The arrested persons were members of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). Three of them belonged to Triplicane and two were from Anna Salai. On Saturday, police had arrested six persons, including the south Chennai district secretary of VCK party in this connection.
