NEW DELHI: More arrests are likely soon in a case of corruption involving a Delhi traffic police sub-inspector and a constable who along with their accomplices allegedly used to extort money from auto-rickshaw drivers and owners in North-East Delhi.

The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government had on Saturday arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector Hari Kishan and Constable Ravinder for allegedly extorting money from an auto-rickshaw owner, Karnail. Preliminary investigations have thrown up the names of at least two more policemen and a conduit who were involved in the racket. A hunt has been launched for them.

According to Karnail, these policemen used to collect Rs.500 per auto-rickshaw per month.

“Through their agents, they collect lakhs of rupees per month from each traffic signal junction by targeting auto-rickshaws and other public transports. In case a person refuses to pay, they threaten to issue court challans to harass him,” alleged Karnail, adding that there would be about 80 auto-rickshaws at each junction.

The driver alleged that the agents used to extort Rs.3,400 per auto-rickshaw coming from nearby places in Uttar Pradesh on monthly basis. “The collected money is distributed among the agents and the unscrupulous local policemen and traffic personnel,” he alleged.

In another development, the Anti-Corruption Branch is learnt to have registered a case in which a Delhi police officer has been accused of illegally “leasing” a place to a private party for the purpose of parking vehicles. According to the complainant, the place was not designated as a parking-lot by the authorities concerned, but the accused officer had permitted parking of vehicles against monetary considerations.

Continuing its drive, the Anti-Corruption Branch recently arrested a JE with the Shahdara (North) Zone of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for allegedly demanding money to allow illegal construction in DDA flats. He had allegedly appointed a conduit to collect bribes. Also, an upper division clerk of the slum wing of the MCD was arrested recently for allegedly demanding and receiving bribe.

In yet another case, an assistant manager with an insurance firm was arrested on charges of taking bribe from a person to clear the insurance amount he had claimed following the theft of his vehicle.
