Guruvayur Dorai Trust Excellence Award presented

CHENNAI: The intricate, beautiful cadence of South Indian music with its great tradition of percussion instruments is unparalleled, said Education and Culture Minister M.A. Baby here on Saturday.

While the triumvirate in South India were composing their legendary compositions, in Europe western classical greats such as Mozart and Beethovan were also creating music, he said at a function organised by the Guruvayur Dorai Trust to honour percussionist Tiruchi Thayumanavar.

Industrialist L. Sabaretnam, who presented the ‘Guruvayur Dorai Trust Excellence’ Award to the percussionist, said such honours provided encouragement to the performer.

The awardee hailed from a rich tradition of ‘guru-shisya parampara’ and had accompanied many musicians for over six decades.

Singer K.J. Yesudoss referred to Mr. Thayumanavar as his guru and one who had nurtured many students as a mother would her children. Musician T.V. Gopalakrishnan said, for Carnatic music practitioners to flourish, there must be encouragement.

V.V. Sundaram, Secretary, Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana Committee and Guruvayur Dorai, founder of the Trust, spoke.
