Gujarat scores an innings win

Chennai: Gujarat wrapped up an innings win over Orissa in its final Ranji Trophy super league group match at Bhubaneshwar on Sunday, bowling the home side out for 149 in its second innings. Off-spinner Mohnish Parmar picked up his second six-wicket haul of the match.

Mumbai blitzed to a nine-wicket win over Punjab at Mumbai, racing to its target of 149 in just over 27.1 overs, with Wasim Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane continuing their exceptional form for the season with unbeaten half-centuries.

HP progresses

Himachal Pradesh will play Mumbai in the quarterfinals, after winning its plate division semifinal against Madhya Pradesh by an innings and 175 runs at Nagpur. Needing 351 to make Himachal bat again, Madhya Pradesh was bowled out for 176, with Mohinderraj Sharma and Sarandeep Singh sharing nine wickets.

Bengal progressed from the other plate semifinal at Delhi, thanks to its first innings lead against Goa, which was bowled out for 230 in response to Bengal’s 337. The match ended with Bengal on 193 for five, with Manoj Tiwary making 80.

The scores: Super league: At Chennai: Tamil Nadu 475 for six decl. and 389 for seven decl. in 81 overs (K.B. Arun Karthik 107, S. Suresh Kumar 90, C. Ganapathy 53 n.o., V. Yomahesh 47) drew with Railways 314. Points: TN 3, Railways 1.

At Jaipur: Rajasthan 295 and 55 for three in 19 overs drew with Delhi 688 in 178.4 overs (A. Chopra 210, S. Dhawan 118, V. Kohli 83, R. Bhatia 112, P. Sangwan 53, Pankaj Singh four for 125). Delhi 3, Rajasthan 1.

At Bhubaneshwar: Orissa 162 and 149 in 58.4 overs (N. Behera 50, M. Parmar six for 51) lost to Gujarat 394 in 189.2 overs (P.K. Panchal 59, Parthiv Patel 206, Timil Patel 48). Delhi 6, Orissa 0.

At Mumbai: Punjab 202 and 382 in 97 overs (S. Sohal 51, U. Kaul 136, A. Kakkar 58) lost to Mumbai 436 and 151 for one in 27.1 overs (W. Jaffer 52 n.o., A. Rahane 82 n.o). Mumbai 5, Punjab 0.

Plate division semifinals: At Nagpur: Madhya Pradesh 228 and 176 in 50.3 overs (H. Kanitkar 66, Mohinderraj Sharma five for 45, Sarandeep Singh four for 52) lost to Himachal Pradesh 579 in 189.5 overs (B.J. Thakkar 111, Vinit Indulkar 80, Mukesh Sharma 161, A. Mannu 93).

At Delhi: Bengal 337 and 193 for five in 46 overs (Manoj Tiwary 80, Dibyendu Chakrabarty 49) drew with Goa 230 in 83.5 overs (Ranadeb Bose six for 62). Bengal goes through on the basis of first innings lead.

Quarterfinal line-up (December 26-29): Mumbai vs Himachal Pradesh (Ahmedabad); Saurashtra vs Karnataka (Mumbai - Brabourne); Gujarat vs U.P. (Baroda); Tamil Nadu vs. Bengal (Bangalore).
