Punjab wins maiden trophy

KOLKATA: Punjab won the Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy (under-22) for the first time in its maiden appearance in the final defeating Mumbai by 90 runs on the fourth and final day at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday.

Set a target of 286, Mumbai ended the third day at 135 for four. Still needing 152 runs to retain the trophy, Mumbai lost the remaining six wickets for the addition of only 61 runs. Mediumpacer Harmeet Bansal grabbed five wickets to restrict Mumbai to 196 in 51.3 overs.

Overnight batsmen Abhishek Raut (41) and Iqbal Abdullah (39) resisted the Punjab attack for some time before departing. Tailender Rohan Raje (24) used the long handle effectively but all the efforts went in vain.

The Cricket Association of Bengal President, Jagmohan Dalmiya, gave away the trophy.

The scores: Punjab 308 and 57 vs Mumbai 79 and 196 (Abhishek Raut 41; Harmeet Bansal seven for 56). — Special Correspondent
