Uttarakhand men upset Haryana

VOLLEYBALL / Andhra Pradesh women shock Kerala

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh women shocked holder Kerala 3-2 and Uttarakhand men upset the defending champion Haryana 3-1, which is without two of its key players, in the league stage of the Senior National volleyball championships for the ONGC Cup at the Port indoor stadium here on Sunday.

Services which lost its opening match to Uttarakhand came back to form with a three-set win over Railways late in the evening.

AP women, quarterfinalists last year, surprised Kerala with their speed and allround display and grabbed a two-set lead and then capitalised on the rivals’ mistakes in crucial stages of the decider to clinch the match. AP won 29-27, 25-23, 22-25, 15-25, 15-11.

Manemma along with L. Anitha Reddy and K.V. Pavithra played an attacking game with setter E. Mounika and blocker Naina doing a good job.

Trailing 5-7 AP earned a point after Pavithra sent in a perfect smash. Change of courts turned the tide in favour of the host. Hemalata with Mounika and Pavithra provided perfect block as the team surged ahead. Manemma’s telling smash gave the team 12-9 lead and Kerala floundered against Anitha Reddy’s blocks with Mounika or Hemalatha. Manemma scored the winning point with a fine smash.

Haryana men entered the court without internationals Sanjay Kumar and Raghuveer Singh. Uttarakhand was ahead in the first set though it was a neck-to-neck affair which it won 28-26 and dominated the rival in the second to win at 25-16.

Haryana managed to win the third after being tied 15-all and again at 18. A couple of faults by Uttarakhand in the last stage of the set saw Haryana winning it at 25-22. Uttarakhand dominated the fourth while Haryana faltered with its serve many times to lose 20-25.

Pool E: Assam bt Delhi 25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 17-25, 15-12; Rajasthan bt Maharashtra 25-21, 25-20, 11-25, 25-23; West Bengal bt Bihar 25-15, 25-17, 25-17.

Women: Pool A: Andhra Pradesh bt Kerala 29-27, 25-23, 22-25, 15-25, 15-11; West Bengal bt Maharashtra 25-21, 25-10, 25-16. Pool B: Railways bt Karnataka 25-14, 25-13, 25-12. Pool C: Uttar Pradesh bt Jharkhand 25-22, 25-22, 25-19; Mizoram bt Rajasthan 25-18, 25-6, 25-18. Pool D: Haryana bt Madhya Pradesh 20-25, 11-25, 25-21, 25-20, 17-25. Pool E: Delhi bt Uttarakhand 25-9, 25-15, 25-12.
