NEW DELHI: Using the latest environment-friendly technology, ITC has launched “Paperkraft Premium Business Paper,” a multipurpose green paper. Used for the first time in India, Paperkraft has been created with the “Ozone Treated Elemental Chlorine Free Technology.” Meant for use in offices and homes, this product is described as an integral part of ITC’s initiatives to “go green” and augment natural and scare resources. Paperkraft is the whitest and brightest 75 GSM business paper manufactured in the country, according to an ITC statement. It is being marketed by the ITC’s education and stationery products business. Specialised treatmentA specialised chemical treatment has enabled it to become an eco-friendly paper with a longer archival life. Conventionally, elemental chlorine is used in the bleaching process during paper manufacture. The byproducts of this process include a large number of organochlorine chemicals, which are toxic and adversely impact the environment. The new technology virtually eliminates the production of toxins as elemental chlorine has been substituted with chlorine dioxide. “Ozone treatment” results in even lower chemical usage and reduced water pollution, says the ITC. In paper manufacture, ITC has been India’s first company to adopt the Elemental Chlorine Free technology and it has surpassed all legislative stipulations on emission levels, says the statement. ITC sources the raw material from its social and farm forestry project, which covers over 85,000 hectares and has created over 35 million mandays of employment, according to the company.
