Dense fog hits power supply in Rajasthan

Special Correspondent

Tripping of major transmission lines

Shortfall of 40 lakh units in the State

Steps being taken to restore normal supply

JAIPUR: The dense blanket of fog enveloping several northern States on Sunday adversely affected power supply in Rajasthan, where the availability of electricity registered a sharp decline by 40 lakh units following the tripping of transmission lines connected with the Northern Grid.

The Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam sources said here that the Badarpur-Alwar transmission line supplying electricity from the Central power stations to the State was tripped late on Saturday night and its repair was in progress till Sunday evening.

The short-circuiting of the Hissar-Khetri line also affected power transmission briefly in the night intervening Saturday and Sunday, but it was restored by Sunday afternoon.

The tripping of the two major transmission lines shifted the entire load to Hirapura-Bassi line, forcing the Vidyut Prasaran Nigam to cut the feeders in the rural areas for some time. The snag in several transmission lines in the northern States, which could not be repaired, also caused a shortage in the power supply in Rajasthan.

The sources pointed out that Rajasthan, situated at the tail-end of the Northern Grid network, had to bear the maximum impact of shortage in power supply. Despite this, the three public sector power distribution companies in the State were taking steps to maintain the normal levels of supply of electricity.

An average of 12 crore units of electricity is presently being supplied everyday to the consumers across the State. The sources said 50 lakh more units of electricity in comparison with the last year were being supplied to agricultural consumers during the ongoing rabi crop season.

The thick fog all over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh is stated to be the result of excessive moisture present in the air and a decline in the night temperature. Besides reducing visibility levels, it has led to short-circuiting of conductor wires in the power transmission lines.
