Congress to support DMK candidate in by-election

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Congress will support the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in the forthcoming by-election to the Thirumangalam constituency.

Announcing this here on Sunday, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V.Thangkabalu said the party had formed an election committee under N.S.V.Chittan, MP to campaign for the DMK in the by-election.

Mr.Thangkabalu said the party workers would actively work for the victory of the DMK candidate as they did for the Congress in the earlier by-election.

Condemning the attack on the party headquarters Satyamurthi Bhavan and burning of effigies of Congress leaders in different parts of the State, Mr.Thangkabalu said the party could not remain mute spectators. He wanted the government to take stringent action against those who indulged in violence against Congress workers. Though Viduthalai Chiruthaigal leader Thol.Tirumavalavan denied that his party men were involved in the “violence,” the reality was that it was they who indulged in the act. The party had restrained Congress workers from retaliating and this should not be considered their weakness. He also thanked the State government for arresting volunteers of VCK and the Periyar Dravida Kazhagam for indulging in “violence.”
