Coimbatore: Computerisation of courts across the country will be completed by 2010 and work on this is going on in full swing, Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan told presspersons here on Sunday after inaugurating the 126th Annual Day celebrations of the Coimbatore Bar Association. The e-committee of the Supreme Court led by a retired Judge of the Supreme Court was visiting High Courts to oversee and coordinate the works. Funds were not a constraint and the National Informatics Centre has taken up installing the computers. The government had already accorded sanction for 4,000 courts for rural areas to help clear the backlog of cases and in rendering speedy justice. On the issue of vacant judicial officers posts and creation of new courts to clear backlog of cases across the country, the Chief Justice said the entire process might take another two to three years. The State governments should come forward to establish new courts. On prisons getting overcrowded with undertrials, especially those facing trial in petty offences (wherein punishment for offences would be lesser than the period spent in jail by the accused awaiting trial), Mr. Balakrishnan said the option of pre-bargain should be used by the prosecution and the accused in such cases.
