CHENNAI: National squash champion Joshna Chinappa, alumni of Ethiraj College, was felicitated on Saturday by the college for her recent achievement of being the first Indian woman player to win a WISPA title. The college presented her a cheque for Rs. 25,000 and a citation. More than 800 students and alumni and staff of Ethiraj College participated in the function at which the Madras University Vice-Chancellor Dr. S. Ramachandran was the chief guest. A graduate from Ethiraj College, Joshna had won back to back WISPA titles in the NSC Super Satellite Series in Kuala Lumpur in November. She is currently placed 37th in the World women’s squash ranking. While hailing Joshna’s performance, the Vice-Chancellor also praised the Ethiraj College for being “the best college for sports in Madras University.” Mr. W.I. Davaram, President, Tamil Nadu Amateur Athletic Association, said, “Joshna Chinappa has joined Sania Mirza and Saina Nehwal to be the top three sportswomen in the country”. Dr. J.P. Sukumar, Registrar, Tamil Nadu Sports University, said, “Hard work and talent had bought laurels to Joshna Chinappa.”
