Indefinite strike by heavy vehicles

CHENNAI: About 10,000 heavy vehicles engaged in transporting goods from and to the Ennore and Chennai ports stayed off the road as part of an indefinite strike since Friday midnight to highlight the bad road conditions in north Chennai.

R. Sugumar, president of the Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur Lorry, Tanker, Tipper Owners’ Association, said that they had suspended their efforts to repair Ponneri High Road after the National Highways Authority of India officials assured them of remedial action. The officials said that patch work would be carried out on Madhavaram Ring Road, Ponneri High Road and Ennore Expressway too. However, the lorries kept off roads on Saturday seeking a permanent solution .
