Chennai: A series of public consultations for the review of the city development plan under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission are to be conducted till March next year for various groups of stakeholders. M.G. Devashayam, a member of the review team with GHK Consultancy, said that the consultations would be organised for representatives of local bodies, workers in the informal economy sector and those in the formal economy sector. On Saturday, a consultation was organised for councillors of the Chennai Corporation. However, only 12 of the city’s 155 councillors participated . Mayor M. Subramanian said that most of the councillors were engaged in the distribution of flood relief in their wards and could not attend the programme. The councillors who were present at the meeting offered suggestions for projects to be included in the city development plan. An overhaul of old drinking waterlines to curb leakage and setting up rain water harvesting systems in roads and parks were among the suggestions. Mr. Devasahayam said that the next public consultation would be organised for representatives of town panchayats and later for the formal and informal economic sectors. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said that the consultants would prepare a report examining the techniques used internationally to control mosquitoes. Two international consultant groups – GHK Consultancy and DHV Consultancy – have undertaken the city development plan reviews. While GHK Consultancy would organise public discussions among stakeholders, DHV Consultancy would prepare a report on waterways management, solid waste management and mosquito control.
