‘National crop insurance scheme’ for banana

Staff Reporter

A target of 155 hectares of crop fixed for the programme

Ensuring security: Reeta Harish Thakkar, District Collector, listening to the grievances of a farmer in Pudukottai on Friday.

PUDUKOTTAI: The subsidy-based National Crop Insurance scheme will be implemented to benefit banana-growers in eleven firkas in Pudukottai district. A target of 155 hectares of the crop has been fixed for the programme, the District Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar said.

Presiding over the Farmers’ Grievances Day meeting here on Friday, the Collector said that a subsidy would be available in the premium for all farmers including big farmers.

The scheme would cover both borrowers and non-borrowers of bank loans.

Although banana crop had been covered under the crop insurance scheme in the district, this was the first time that the subsidy-based programme was being implemented.

The borrowers should insure the crop by remitting the premium with the nationalised or cooperative banks on or before February 28, 2009. For non-borrowers, the last date was January 15.

To be eligible

The Collector appealed to the banana-growers to take maximum advantage of the scheme so as to be eligible for indemnity in the aftermath of any unforeseen calamity or damage to the crop.

The Deputy Director of Horticulture, P. Rasu, said that eleven firkas notified for the scheme were Poovathakudi (Aranthangi block); Mazhaiyur and Karambakudi (Karambakudi); Pudunagar, Gandarvakottai and Kallakottai (Gandarvakottai); Alankudi, Keeramangalam, Vennavalkudi and Valanadu firkas (Tiruvarankulam); and Vaarappur (Pudukottai).

Explaining the non-computerisation of the ‘chitta’ registers in several parts of the district, the District secretary of the Communist Party of India, S. P. Muthukumaran, said that the authorities should not insist on the production of the document for insuring the banana crop.

The president of the Federation of the District Kallanai Kalvai Ayacutdar Associations, A. Ramasamy, pleaded for higher compensation for the flood-hit farmers.

The Collector said that the Highways Department had sanctioned Rs.2.5 crore for the district for repairing the roads and bridges damaged by the torrential showers.
