MUMBAI: Uday Kaul’s compact, patient batting on day three looked like an attempt to emulate the display by Mumbai’s batting heavyweights earlier in the Ranji Trophy Elite League Group A match. The Punjab left-hander (117 not out, 174b, 15 x 4) dealt with the home team attack confidently for 252 minutes as the visitors made up for first innings collapse with a fighting 363 for eight in the second innings at the Brabourne stadium on Saturday. Mumbai used seven bowlers, including Rohit Sharma’s off-cutters, to break down Punjab’s challenge and needs two more wickets on the fourth and final day before the victory target becomes clear. The home team trails by 129 runs, following a middle-order recovery by Punjab. Kaul found an able partner in Ankur Kakkar (58 off 64 balls). Later Chandan Madan hit 32 off 46 balls as the defiant mood continued. Sohal’s fiftyOpener Sunny Sohal stroked 51 off 56 balls against the Mumbai pace and seam bowlers in the morning before finding his off-stump uprooted by Rajesh Verma, who also deceived Karan Goel next. India leg-spinner Ramesh Powar dealt swift blows by removing Ravi Inder Singh, cutting on the backfoot and snicking behind, then Pankaj Dharmani, beaten by turn and lofting an easy catch. Kaul and Kakkar teamed up at 169 for four and had 107 stand. The scores: Punjab — 1st innings: 202. Mumbai — 1st innings: 436. Punjab — 2nd innings: S. Sohal b Verma 51, K. Goel lbw b Verma 26, R.I.
