Perth: South Africa skipper Graeme Smith scored a superb 147-ball 108, after his side was set a target of 414 on the fourth day of the first Test against Australia here on Saturday. South Africa ended the day at 227 for three. Strong and composed, Smith scored with an authority that allowed his side a genuine, even if difficult, chance at achieving the target. The left-hander found just the right kind of support he needed, from Hashim Amla. The duo’s 153-run came after Smith and Neil McKenzie managed just 19 runs in 14.3 overs. Smith’s 18th century — and his first against Australia — came in 138 balls, after he reached 6000 Test runs when on seven. His innings comprised 13 boundaries. Earlier, Brad Haddin took Australia’s second innings score to 319, smashing a 136-ball 94 with seven 4s and four 6s.
