Shanti Swaroop awards presented

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday presented the prestigious Shanti Swaroop awards to 21 young scientists from different academic and research institutions for the years 2007 and 2008.

The winners include Narayanaswamy Srinivasan, Pundi Narasimhan Rangarajan and P.N. Vinayachandran of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Upinder Singh Bhalla of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, Jarugu Narasimha Moorthy and Amalendu Chandra of IIT, Kanpur, A. Ajayaghosh of the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, Anil Bhardwaj of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, and Rama Govindarajan and Srikanth Sastry of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore.

The other awardees are: Pradeep Thalappil and Budaraju Srinivasa Murty of IIT, Chennai, B.V. Rajarama Bhat of the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, Yashwant Gupta of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Pune, Pinaki Majumdar of the Harish-Chandra Research Insitute, Kolkata, Gajendra Pal Singh Raghava of the Institute of Micobial Technology, Chandigarh, L.S. Shashidhara of the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, Ranjan Kumar Mallik of IIT, Delhi, Jaikumar Radhakrishnan of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, Ravinder Goswami of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Raghunathan Srianand of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune.

Dr. Singh presented the CSIR diamond jubilee technology award 2007 to Mahindra and Mahindra Limited for development and commercialisation of its all-terrain ‘Scorpio’ vehicle. According to the citation read out on the occasion, the award was being given since with the development of the SUV, Mahindra and Mahindra had moved into the international league of automobile manufacturers.

He also presented the CSIR award for S&T innovations for Rural Development for 2007 to the National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang for improvement of sustainable yak husbandry practices in the Himalayan region and Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute, Phaltan and National Chemical Laboratory, Pune for their work towards increasing lamb production and the award for 2008 jointly to Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar for innovations in the area of salt production and the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow, for developing a bio-village strategy for agri-business of medicinal and aromatic plants.
