Sadananda Gowda brings about rapprochement between factions

Karwar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership appears to have set its house in order in Karwar Assembly Constituency over the candidature of Anand Asnotikar.

BJP State unit president D.V. Sadanand Gowda appears to have brought about a rapprochement between two factions.

Lalji Mendon, fishermen leader and Kapu MLA said this at a press conference here on Friday.

BJP State Fisheries Morcha president Ramachandra Baikampadi was present.

About the exodus of leaders from the party, he said only a few the leaders had left the party and not the workers.

About allegations that Mr. Asnotikar was coming in the way of second phase expansion of the Karwar port, because the union was led by him and in case of the expansion of port he would lose his clout and income source, Mr. Mendon and Mr. Baikampadi said it was for the Government to protect the interests of fishermen.

They said they would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister during his visit to Karwar on December 24, and find a way out.

‘Achievements’

They listed the “achievements” of the BJP Government and the help extended by it to the fishermen.

Mr. Baikampadi said the BJP Government provided the subsidy on diesel and more kerosene to the fishermen.

He said dredging work would be taken up at Karwar port and a fisheries port would be developed in Karwar.

C.D. Krishnapur, president of State Fishermen Association, said fishermen would oppose the expansion of Karwar port. He said after the Sea Bird project, fishermen were left with only four km length of coastal line for fishing.

If the port were to be expanded, then they would lose the only beach that was being used for the traditional fishing, he said.

District BJP president Vinod Prabhu, BJP vice president Prasad Karwarkar, fishermen leaders Gaja Surangekar and Ratan Durgekar were present.
