Tourism promotion getting impetus: Minister

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: In the last two years, the State Government has spent about Rs 10 crore for better maintenance of the Tamil Nadu Hotels across the State while Rs 10 crore had been spent on improving tourism destinations, said Suresh Rajan, Minister for Tourism and Registration on Friday.

He was talking to reporters after inaugurating a tourism information centre in the City.

He said that already the State has 14 tourism information centres and now new centres have been inaugurated at Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore and for Chettinad at Karaikkudi. Tamil Nadu was registering a year-on-year growth of 22 per cent in the arrival of tourists. The Mumbai terror attacks had led to a fall in number of tourists visiting hotels but the situation would improve soon, he said.

District Collector, V. Palanikumar, has been asked to forward a proposal for construction of a boat house and park at Valparai. With the help of Centre and State Government funding, a Rs 1 crore worth Yatri Nivas would be constructed at Valparai for the benefit of tourists visiting the hill station.

For tapping tourism potential in Kovai Coutrallam, Vanabadrakaliamman temple, Valparai, Top Slip and Anaimalai Tiger Reserve, development works were undertaken at an outlay of Rs 3.82 crores. The concept of the Tourist-friendly autorickshaw received good response in Chennai and district collectors have been asked to forward proposals to introduce the same across the State. The Sangamam festival would be held in Coimbatore during Pongal season.
