Eri silk garments launched

Tirupur: The knitted garments made from eri silk spun yarn for the first time was launched at a colourful function here on Friday evening.
It was developed by the Central Silk Board under the Union Ministry of Textiles with the technical support of NIFT-TEA Knitwear Fashion Institute, Tirupur.
A Sakthivel, president of the Tirupur Exporters Association, inaugurated the product.
The development of eri silk knitwear would trigger possibilities for product diversification and better value addition to the textile exporters, who had been presently bogged down by declining demand in western markets owing to global recession.
“These products, which are natural, eco-friendly and elegant, will thus be of immense help to the garment manufacturers to fetch better unit value and to penetrate niche market segments,” he added.
Explaining the salient features of the new product, M. Sathiyavathy, member secretary, Central Silk Board, said that the products made of eri silk would be as comfortable as cotton even while offering the richness of silk.
“The high flexibility properties of eri silk that allows it to blend with other natural fibres like cotton, wool and jute will help the textile manufacturers to come out with exciting wears in terms of textures, surface effects, colour combinations and hand-feel,” she pointed out.
Commissioner of Sericulture (Government of Tamil Nadu) Harmander Singh and Chairman of NIFT-TEA Institute Raja Shanmugam, were present.
Models displayed the eri silk knitwear products at the function for the benefit of foreign and domestic buyers present.
