CBI is facing a backlog of 986 corruption cases

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has approved creation of six additional courts of special judges exclusively for the Central Bureau of Investigation cases in the Capital.
The agency is facing a backlog of 986 corruption cases that are pending in the court.
While 44 cases are over 20 years old, 39 are pending for the past 15 years.
The CBI officers expressed hope that with the creation of new courts, these cases will be disposed of soon. Now, at Patiala House and Karkardooma there will be one CBI court each, whereas Tis Hazari will have four special courts and three CBI courts will be located in the Rohini courts complex.
Of these nine courts, eight courts are exclusively dealing with corruption cases investigated by the CBI.
To assist the courts effectively and for speeding disposal, the agency has introduced appointment of court-wise prosecutors.
The prosecution and monitoring of the cases has now been entrusted to the Anti-Corruption Branch.
Earlier, the cases were being prosecuted and monitored by different branches based in Delhi.
