Indian Bank holds off Madras Sporting Union

CHENNAI: Holder Indian Bank managed a 1-0 win over Madras Sporting Union in a scrappy match on Friday in the St Joseph’s-CFA senior division league at the Nehru stadium.

Fredy scored the winner.

Man to man, the Bank outfit looked better in its approach. But, it was individual efforts that mostly kept its attack going and for this the Bank had to thank players like Fredy and Nirmal Kumar, the two who came repeatedly into view for the brief touches of combined-play. In fact it was a Nirmal flag kick that set up the all the important goal by Fredy in the 60th minute, a low header that left Palmson with no chance.

For all the hustle and bustle that MSU displayed in its opener the other day, the team failed to settle down to any constructive work. Much of it was because of the tight Bank defence where the Manipuri lad Bengkok was outstanding in his interceptions and clearances.

Once again, Riju looked the man who could do the trick for MSU with his intelligent passes but little could the others, especially the Ghanaian Amoafo, inspire.

The way the contest started, the Bank received a rude reminder of how it lost the first outing through a 40-yarder at the last minute, when Pradeep made a snap try. But Nidhinlal was equal to the task.

Earlier in the first division, Central Excise edged Chennai Soccer through a lone goal by Karthikeyan.
