NEW DELHI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission to prevent M.K. Azhagiri, son of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, from entering the Thirumangalam Assembly constituency, where by-election is scheduled for January 9. The memorandum, presented by Pollachi V. Jayaraman, MLA; V. Maitreyan, MP; K. Malaisamy, MP and N. Balaganga, asked the Commission to restrain Mr. Azhagiri from visiting the constituency, pointing to previous poll-related violations in Madurai Central, Madurai West and Madurai Corporation elections. The AIADMK said: “Past instances and untoward happenings in the by-elections are relevant for the purpose of ensuring free and fair elections. Mr. Azhagiri is projected as being in the helm of affairs in the southern districts with a view to somehow succeeding in the by-election.” Apprehending that bogus votes would be cast, the party said “only an independent and fair polling officers under the direct supervision of the Election Commission deputed from other States would ensure that only genuine voters are allowed to exercise their franchise and could prevent bogus voting.” It said recently, the government had released 1,405 convicts from prisons and they might be engaged in polling work. It wanted the Commission to ensure that every voter in the constituency was allowed to exercise his/her franchise without being threatened. ‘Deploy forces’It urged the Commission to deploy para-military forces to ensure that there was no law and order problem. There should be strict verification of voters on polling day. Besides seeking action against Mr. Azhagiri, the AIADMK sought strict action Ministers and officials who violate the model code of conduct.
