CAUGHT IN FRONT: Karnataka’s Appanna appeals successfully against Maharashtra’s M. Mangela. Bangalore: There were no demons in the pitch but 14 wickets fell with Karnataka being marginally ahead with an overall lead of 173 against Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy Super League Group ‘B’ match in progress at the RSI ground here. At close on the second day, Karnataka was 131 for five in its second innings after gaining a 42-run first innings lead as Maharashtra was earlier restricted to 210. Resuming at 35 for one, Maharashtra kept losing wickets with the lone respite being a 69-run third-wicket partnership between skipper Harshad Khadiwale (70, 135b, 9x4) and K. Jadhav. Missed chancesThe duo picked the loose deliveries and enjoyed a reprieve each as Deepak Chougule and C.M. Gautam dropped catches in the close-in cordon while Sunil Joshi suffered. However, the batsmen failed to capitalise as left-arm spinners Joshi and K.P. Appanna bagged four wickets each. Later in the afternoon, the Karnataka batsmen succumbed to poor shots. Skipper Robin Uthappa tried a reverse sweep off left-arm spinner Salil Agharkar while a well-set K.B. Pawan rushed into a lofted drive. Deepak Chougule missed the line in trying to sweep while Gautam and Thilak Naidu were surprised by sharp turn and bounce. In the end, B. Akhil and C. Raghu hung in with a mix of defence and aggression on a spin-dominated day with the seamers not bowling too many overs. The scores: Karnataka — 1st innings: 252. Maharashtra — 1st innings: H.
