THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government, in cooperation with the Sports Authority of India, will establish a National women’s sports academy at Chadyamangalam in Kollam district. Stating this at a press conference here on Friday, the Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar, said the decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the State Cabinet on Wednesday. The Government will transfer 20 acres of land, now belonging to the Agriculture Department, to the SAI for this purpose. The Minister said this was for the first time that an academy tailored solely to the training of women athletes was being set up in the country. The State will also be required to meet a part of the finances required for establishing the academy. The minister said the details of this would be worked out during his meeting with a high-level SAI delegation headed by its secretary, S.S. Chabbra, on Saturday. Issues relating to the Kollam Sports Hostel and the 35th National Games to be held in Kerala in May 2010 are also likely to come up for discussion at the meeting. — Special Correspondent
